What happened to David after two years in the US

Davide, the famed statue by artist Michelangelo, recently returned to Italy after a two year stay in the United States. Before Davide left to the United States, he appeared like this (see first image).

But Italian authorities are baffled by the state that he was returned in (see second image).

Davide's trip was sponsored by McDonald's, Burger King, Taco Bell and KFC.
